Fundamental Skills for Locations Trainees

This two-day (5th & 12th March) online course is brought to you in partnership with the Locations Guild of Ireland and Screen Skillnet.

The Irish Film & TV Industry is growing at a significant rate and the need for set ready new entrants has never been greater.

While the course focuses on the practical skills required to fulfil this role it, it will be delivered in the context of the importance of the soft skills that are so critical in a role that interacts with so many different people, in so many different ways.

Course Content:

  • Overview of the Location Department
  • The role & responsibilities of the Locations Trainee
  • Health & safety
  • Working with crew
  • Working with service providers
  • Working with authorities & statutory bodies
  • Working with location owners and their neighbours
  • The law – how and where it impacts on the Locations Department
  • Personal and career development – tips, tricks, pitfalls and opportunities

Prior to the course, the tutor will contact each participant to get an understanding of their prior experience and what they want to get from the course. Participants will complete questionnaires to help them understand their own learning styles and their conflict management styles.

Participants will get pointers to sources of more detailed information about legal and quasi-legal issues that impact on their role and they will develop checklists and toolkits which will help them to develop procedures and habits that will enhance their effectiveness as Locations Trainees when they are working on set.

Guest speakers will provide detailed input into key content areas.

Participant Profile

This course is aimed at people who are interested in working in the Locations Department, or have some experience and would like to upskill in this area, and gives a very practical insight into the work the Location Department does.

The course is limited to 12 participants.
